Regional Info:
Kuching is the capital of Sarawak in the north west of the beautiful island of Borneo, the third largest island in the world, and split between Malaysia, Indonesia and the Sultanate of Brunei. The population of Borneo is about 18 million and there are over 200 ethnic groups on Borneo. Kuching's population is about 650,000 and it is the most populous city in Sarawak. It is also a popular tourist location and is famous or it's amazing food and also it's penchant for cats! Known as the "City of Cats" (there are several theories as to why with perhaps the most believable being that it was named after the Malay word for cat "kucing") there is a cat museum as well as a multitude of cat statues around the city. Built in the 1800's, much of Kuching was destroyed in the 2nd World War and has had to be rebuilt. You can join a free walking tour of the city with the Tourism Board to learn more of its history. They also provide bikes free of charge to use around the city and visit attractions such as the Astana Palace, Fort Margherita, the Kuching Waterfront, Kuching's oldest Buddhist temple, the Tua Pek Kong Temple, Sarawak Cultural Village, the State Museum, the orangutans at Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Bako National Park, Kuching Wetlands National Park, Satang Turtle Island National Park or Mount Santubong. There is an incredible amount to see and do and the city is also very accessible with regular flights to other destinations in South East Asia, such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
